Young Europeans
Starting in June, The Sprout will take you on a tour around Europe.
We will publish one story per week about member states of the European Union, collected by Vesna Veliscek, a young woman from Slovenia. You will find out what young people in other countries think about the EU, and what it is like to live in another country in the European Union, from where to get the best apple pie in Vienna to which country students get paid to go to university.
The Sprout asked Vesna what inspired her to come up with the idea: "Slovenia is the first country from the last wave of new European Union countries, leading the EU from January to June 2008, and I got the idea to present 27 different countries from the EU while travelling. I met so many people from European countries on the way, who I shared amazing stories with about our countries, ways of living, national cuisine and drinks, and I even learnt to say 'cheers' in 23 different languages of the EU. And of course, I felt a European spirit.
"Europe is small continent in comparison with Asia, Africa and North and Latin America, but at the same time, there are so many different countries in Europe with their own unique culture, values, habits and languages."
The young people who wrote the following articles are Vesna’s friends and people she met while travelling and doing European Voluntary Service in Macedonia, most of them she met through Facebook and Couchsurfing.
There are 27 European Union Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The EU has a population of around 500,000,000 and it has its own parliament, anthem, currency, and flag.
