Tom Daley has received abusive messages on Twitter from a 17-year-old boy.

The diver's dad died of a brain tumour last year but when he came fourth in the 10m synchronised diving along side Pete Waterfield he received a tweet to say that he has let his dad down. Daley responded to this tweet by saying "After giving it my all... you get idiots sending me this...".

The young person, username Rileyy_69, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning (31st July 2012) in a guest house in Weymouth.

Daley has been advised to stay off Twitter for a few days before the preliminary round of the 10m individual dive next Friday (10th August).

The 17-year-old has been bailed to return to the police at a later date whilst they investigate communications made on his Twitter account. When the tweet had spread, Rileyy_69 attempted to apologise to Daley, he tweeted '@TomDaley1994 I’m sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I’m just annoyed we didn’t win I’m sorry tom accept my apology.' Later on he also tweeted 'please i don’t want to be hated I’m just sorry you didn’t win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset.'

But the police confirmed they were investigating the incident and if charged and found guilty could be facing a fine of £2,500.

CHARGED??? Charged with *what*, exactly?

The tweet was distasteful, certainly, but it is terrifying to think that police officers would even *consider* pressing formal charges against someone for simply making such a statement on Twitter. Freedom of speech means the freedom of ALL speech - even the things you don't want to hear.

The day that a person gets arrested for sending a tweet - any tweet - is a dark day for freedom of expression.

There's are certain twitter rules that you have to follow involving abusive tweets towards others. The tweets to Tom Daley from @Rileyy_69 weren't following the twitter rules so if found guilty he will be charged.
