T20: Hants Put The Hurt On Glamorgan With Tight Win
- Hampshire 170-6 (20 overs) beat Glamorgan 164-6 (20 overs) by six runs
- Glamorgan's second home defeat on the spin
- Hants move to the top of the South Division
- Darren Sammy's final game for Glamorgan
Hampshire and Sky Sports were in town so in came the pyro and out went the ball (and the Welsh language updates), as Michael Carberry kick-started Hampshire's innings with some huge sixes off Glamorgan's spinners Andrew Salter and Dean Cosker. At the halfway point they were rollicking along at 96-1.
Carberry finally fell for 59, Stewart Walters taking the first of three great catches in the deep - the second one to dismiss Glenn Maxwell was particularly spectacular - yet Hampshire continued to accelerate with James Adams also hitting a half-century before being clean bowled by Will Owen. With that Glamorgan started chipping away with regular wickets and Hampshire puttered along to 170-6 when a score nearer 200 looked likely.
Glamorgan's batting started slowly, Jacques Rudolph was out again cheaply in this format and the dependable Jim Allenby struggled to 23 while never really beating the field. Glamorgan found themselves at 59-2 at the halfway point. Mark Wallace had a nifty knock of 38 before the stage was set for Darren Sammy and Chris Cooke to lead a late charge.
36 runs required from 3 overs to win, Sammy went swinging, smashing two sixes into the Cathedral Road end. 19 runs from 2 overs, Sammy fell to a leaping catch on the long-on boundary by Adams and with that Sammy departed the game and Glamorgan. Sadly Glamorgan's chances of winning also departed. With 14 runs needed from the final over, Kyle Abbott death bowled like a demon and Salter and Cooke couldn't get it away and Glamorgan finished agonisingly short.
Glamorgan's next home game in the NatWest T20 Blast competition is on Friday 4th July at 6.30pm, tickets are £15 in advance.
