Super Mario Galaxy 2
The original Super Mario Galaxy was a fantastic game with great controls, powerups, graphics and gameplay, and was one of the best games of 2007.
When I first saw the trailer for the sequel I was both excited and sceptical because I was afraid that it might not be as good as the original and wouldn’t live up to my expectations.
I got the game the first day it came out in the UK, on 11 June 2010, and I went home and started playing, and I've got to say the game is awesome!
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a great follow-up and is as good as the original. Like the first game it has fantastic controls, the gameplay’s brilliant and the designs are just magnificent.
The graphics looks the same as the original, and recycle the same old storyline like all the other Mario games, but the graphics still look great for Wii standards and it goes back to the less is more idea.
There’s a lot more stars to collect, and you collect 70 stars to beat the game versus 60 in the last game, so this lasts longer and once you collect all 120 stars you collect another 121 which are all hidden in all of the galaxies.
Once you've done that you’ll unlock a secret galaxy where you get the last star in the game. In total there are 241 stars. Yeah, that’s a lot of stars, isn’t it?
Also, this game is a lot harder than the first so it’s great for experienced players, but it can be frustrating for younger players. That’s where the super guide feature comes along, which was first introduced in New Super Mario Bros. for Wii.
After you die several times, a figure of Rosalina from the original pops up and it asks you if you want the CPU to complete the level for you if you find it too difficult, so it’s good for younger players, but you only get a bronze star instead of the usual gold star.
In the original game you unlock Luigi after you collect all the stars, but in the sequel you can play Luigi in some levels in the game if you want to. There’s not much difference between the two, but it’s good to play Luigi instead of Mario once in a while.
Of course I've got to talk about the power ups, no Mario game is complete without them. The bee suit, fire suit and spring suit from the original make a comeback in the sequel, but there are some new power ups too.
First is the cloud suit. You use it when after a jump you shake the Wii remote to make a cloud platform. It’s useful when you want to get to higher, unreachable buildings, and when you are about to fall and die you can use the suit to help you.
Next is the rock suit. You use it to smash through big rocks that you can’t break, and you can find coins and hidden stuff so it’s great suit. Last one is the drill where you use it to drill through the ground to find coins and hidden places, and it’s really is a great addition to the Mario series.
The cosmic missions make a return in this game and are hard as ever. So hard that it just makes you want to scream and throw the controller. So it’s a lot more challenging than the original, and that’s what makes a great game.
Overall, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is fantastic game, and it’s as good as the original. If you love the first game then you should definitely get this.
I give this game a perfect 10/10.
