Speaker's Competition
Raw Deal or Truth Told? Young people in the media competition.
The House of Lords, in conjunction with the Hansard Society, is calling for 11-16 year olds to submit their views on the portrayal of young people in the media. Although you'll have to move fast, as the deadline is 5 June 2009.
Students can choose how they respond to this issue. They may decide to write a 'think piece' on the subject or a newspaper-style article, while others might create a presentation, short film or audio clip and interview local politicians and classmates (although these are all just suggestions).
Whatever the method or format, young people can draw on their own skills and experiences to make their submissions as informative and engaging as possible.
The winners of the best submissions will:
receive an all-expenses paid trip to Westminster (must be accompanied by a teacher/youth worker/parent/guardian)
tour the Houses of Parliament
meet with the Lord Speaker
receive a visit from the Head of Outreach in the House of Lords in advance of their visit to Westminster to help prepare you for discussing your submission with the Communications Committee
have an opportunity to discuss their submission with the Members of the House of Lords Communications Committee
win £25 for each member of the team (up to five people).
But every entrant will have played their part in giving their views on an important issue and the competition organisers will produce a report about how young people feel they are portrayed in the media, based on all the entries received. All entrants will receive a signed certificate from the Lord Speaker and Lord Fowler (chairman of the Communications Committee) acknowledging their contribution.
