  • Fishing At River Ely

A brand-spanking-new fishing and picnic area, located on the banks of the River Ely, has opened for the start of the new fishing season.

The site has been created with disabled access and cycle stands, and allows any members of the public to take advantage of the glorious surroundings of the banks of the River Ely, so they can participate in one of the nation's most popular sports. Gaining access to the area has been made easier as the once uneven Ely Trail, has been resurfaced.

Additions have been made to the facilities at the River Ely, eight separate platforms have been installed, whilst a picnic area has been designated along the trail overlooking the river. Plans for a new cycling link will be created from the Ely Trail to Ferry Road, which will provide a safe path to cycle away from the busy main roads.

Fishing in the bay area has exploded in popularity, in no small part due to the launch of Cardiff Harbour Authority permits earlier this year. Permits can be bought from the Cardiff Bay Visitor Centre (that tube like building by the Norwegian Church), Channel View Leisure Centre and local angling stores (check the Harbour Authority's website if you need more details). With the new fishing and picnic area being accessible for the disabled and also angling platforms that are disabled-friendly, participation in the sport will hopefully be further encouraged.

Also occasional-Dr-Who-stomping ground, Grangemoor Park, which was built on the site of Ferry Road tip, has a new plan that is currently being developed. This new plan will hopefully provide more seats, signs, and promo material, as well as improving the occasionally bumpy paths and making some more parking spaces.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture, said: “I was delighted to officially open the new fishing and picnic area which demonstrates the fantastic collaboration between the Council and external organisations.

He also said “This attractive amenity area has retained an uninterrupted corridor for wildlife along the river bank and is an accessible location to provide local people with the opportunity to experience this very enjoyable pastime right on their doorstep.”
