Remembering VE Day: 70 Years On
Friday 8th May 2015 was the 70th anniversary of VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day.
On this day in 1945, Europe celebrated the end of a six-year-long war. The day was celebrated all over the country, and big celebrations took place in the capital, London, especially in Trafalgar Square.
The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who had led the nation through the war, made a famous speech that was broadcasted live to Trafalgar Square, saying:
"We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad. Advance, Britannia! Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!"
This was just a snippet of his speech, but it was probably the most famous section.
70 years on, we need to remember, not just those who died, but those who survived - everyone who saved our nation from the grip of the Nazis and Hitler.
Men and women, we salute you, and may your spirits live on.
