Parking Wardens: Why We Should Despise Them

Parking wardens, or traffic wardens as they are sometimes known, are people who have the job of going around the streets slapping tickets on unsuspecting drivers who are not in the car.

Recently, I was down on Albany Road and as you probably already know, the traffic warden force is hot around that area. They are there all the time, because the parking situation is absolutely appalling.

Anyway, a poor courier man parked down one of the side streets for two minutes because he had to deliver a parcel to one of the shops and he came back to find a penalty notice on his windscreen!

This is disgraceful of the council to do this. Absolutely disgraceful! There was nowhere else for the guy to park at all, it was chock-a-bloc and it always is. I hope that the man appeals about this because that ticket is probably about three-hours work for him. That's basically like giving someone three-hours community service for parking somewhere when they either had to park there because they had no choice, or they need to because of their job like the poor courier man.

According to The Guardian in 2011, during six months, Cardiff Council issued more than 30,000 parking tickets making the authorities a staggering £794,305. This is just selfishness in my opinion.

I was once by Cineworld in town by the big car park, and there is a little side street there where people park to pick their children up. It was apparently a taxi rank and loads of people were getting tickets (I didn't luckily because I was in the car with my mum) and they were arguing with the wardens because why wouldn't they? If there wasn't a sign saying it was a taxi rank visible to everyone (which there wasn't), then how is it fair if someone gets a fine when they don't know something?

When I reported this to the council through fixmystreet.com, I had a reply saying that there was a sign there and it was perfectly visible. But after checking again I did not come across anything to say that it was a taxi rank. At least there wasn't a sign on a pole; the council would have to be pretty thick to paint it on the road because obviously most drivers do not look at the markings on the road when they are concentrating on driving! It is actually a hazard if the council did paint it on the floor (I am not sure if the sign is on the floor or not but this is a possibility because I didn't look on the road when I checked).

Anyway, I think that the council should review their parking policies before they start issuing out more tickets, and getting thirsty for more money.

It is utterly disgraceful! Comment below with your opinions and experiences!

Completely agree, if there's no where else to go there should be no penalty. This especially relevant when it is due to there job!

"obviously most drivers do not look at the markings on the road when they are concentrating on driving"? Really?! That's kind of an important element of driving. Many crucial indications are marked on the roads themselves.

"Despise them"? Dude, they're just doing a job, like the courier. If you're going to have a go at anybody, have a go at the government, whose constant cuts have meant Cardiff County Council have to save/raise a staggering sum of £124 million.

You wanna chill out, sit back and do some research before you start throwing vitriolic tirades at people. (Irony noted.)

SamuelPatterson - Once again, I did not ask for a personal attack, I asked for opinions. You quoted my sentence where I said about how most drivers don't look at the markings on the road. If you don't know the place I am talking about in Cardiff Central by the St David's car park, then it is a very narrow road running by there. As you turn your car, trying to negotiate the turn and trying not to crash into anything, your attention would not be drawn to the markings on the ground. You said that I should 'have a go at the government'. What do you suggest, a title saying 'The Government: Why we should despise them'? Do you honestly think that there is enough detail in that title for someone to want to click on it? I have written an article before saying about how the title is important and how our attention span is less than a goldfish............no one is going to want to click on the title mentioning the government because it could be about anything! I took my time on this article and to tell me that I need to 'do some research' is just utterly inappropriate seeing that I did, and I have stated some very important facts in here. I took my time on this article so that is a bit hurtful writing that. I am not throwing 'vitriolic tirades' at people, I wrote this article stating my opinion and I also asked for the reader's opinions; I didn't ask for a very rude comment that is offensive and that I have to reply to or my reputation may be destroyed.

Traffic Wardens can be complete planks, but at the end of the day, they're just doing their Job. You mentioned the parking situation on Albany Road, and I agree, it's appalling, but imagine what it would be like WITHOUT traffic wardens. It would be complete and utter mayhem. Maybe also, since you said in your comment that it was your opinion, the title shouldn't have been 'Traffic Wardens: Why we should despise them', and something more along the lines of 'Traffic Wardens: Why I despise them', or, 'Traffic Wardens: Why they annoy me'.

Apart from those things, I enjoyed reading this highly informative and interesting article. Thanks for publishing it Sean! :-)

I do agree that if there's no where to park and you need to drop off a parcel that will only take you 2 minutes then you shouldn't get fined. But, how do these people know? It is their job. But that's my opinion.
