Oxfam Cafe: The Big Food Debate
I recently became part of Oxfam Cardiff, a lovely group of people who give up their time freely to campaign on behalf of Oxfam in and around the Welsh capital. I had already helped out at Oxjam music events and knew how to fund raise like the best of 'em, but have now learnt much more about how a charity goes about campaigning in order to get things to change.
The group organises a monthly Oxfam Cafe, where anyone can meet to talk about development issues in Wales and around the world over a drink or two, and it is an ideal way to meet some cool new people, discuss current affairs, and get involved in campaigning for the first time. The event is totally free to attend and I guarantee that you will fill your boots with inspiration and new ideas.
The guest speaker this month is Jenny Howell from Orchard Cardiff and she will enlighten us with tales of how her group are making the most of the huge resource of Cardiff's fruit trees and bushes. Oxfam Cardiff would then like you to come up with ideas for a joint local food event between Cardiff and an Oxfam group in Japan. Exciting stuff!
In the second half of the evening there will be a debate around sustainable food movements and the more mainstream supermarket approach to food. You'll have the opportunity to put your questions to a diverse panel about an issue that we will be talking about for generations to come - how best to use our scarce resources to make sure we all have enough to eat.
If any of this sounds like your cup of tea, the Cafe will take place on Tuesday 11th September between 7.30 - 9.30pm and will be held upstairs in Bacchus on Park Place, across the road from the museum (formerly Cardiff Arts). Pop by for a drink and the most interesting chat you'll have in a long time!
