New Experience #91: A Poet With An Orchestra
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama played host to poet Ian McMillan and his Orchestra as part of his UK tour. The definition of an orchestra may be in question here; there were only five members, but nonetheless they provided a marvellous musical accompaniment to some warm and witty poetry performed by Ian.
A very cheerful affair that featured plenty of audience banter and the most wonderful of stringed instrument, the hurdy-gurdy.
Rating: 4/5 Despite the tenuous use of 'orchestra' by the promoters, the show reinforced the ancient link between poetry and song most eloquently.

New Experience #92: Olympic Ambassador Celebration
Yet another Olympic related new experience?! That's right and surely the last of the year. To say ta to all the Cardiff volunteers, the council pulled out all the leftover budget to put on a brilliant celebration dinner at City Hall. Greeted with champagne and treated to a three-course meal (we'd expected a finger buffet), we then had a night of talks from lots of important people and were presented with commemorative relay batons courtesy of LOCOG. It was a tip-top-tidy way to see our fellow volunteers again and gain yet another Olympic memory.
Rating: 5/5 I sat next to a student from Shanghai, I held a Paralympian's Gold Medal and talked journalism with an ex-Cardiff Devils-cum-ESPN reporter who worked the games. The veggie option was edible and the speeches were short. Full marks all round!
