New Experience #87: Cinema In A Caf

When I spotted on Twitter that Crwys Road's Th Pot was putting on movie nights I jumped for joy. This cosy, friendly little cafe-cum-venue has always been a favourite and so I Tweeted back to book two tickets for a (veggie) meal and a screening of Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. After a some cracking nosh we settled down to watch the film, projected onto the cloth covered specials board. The bustle of Cathays passed by outside as the warm and witty film, set on a train travelling through India, threw fast-paced humour and vibrancy into the small, candle lit room. One of my favourite new experiences so far and one of the best ways to spend £7 on an evening out in Cardiff.

Rating: 5/5 More menu board should be used like this! The Coen Bothers Season is next, check out @ThePotCafe for showing times.

New Experience #88: Performing In A Pub

I joined The Unknown Theatre Company over the summer and prepared for a role in Sondheim's daring musical Assassins, which we performed in Irish pub Dempsey's. The show brings together the assassins of U.S. Presidents in an emotional, politically charged and unexpectedly funny musical, of which I loved being a part. It was the first time I have performed within an audience and without a stage and I really enjoyed the interactivity that ensued. I was kept on my toes as I had to quickly find and pick up one of the audience members' bottles in one of my longer passages of dialogue, which on one night meant crossing the room to find a drinker! I played Leon Czolgosz, an impoverished Polish-American who shot President William McKinley in 1901 and grew to sympathise with him despite his killer deed.

Rating: 4/5 The venue was perfect for the grotty nature of the show but the lack of space during a full house did prove somewhat restrictive. The more accessible theatre is the better and this is one way to attract a different sort of crowd.

Suggestions for new things to try are, as always, welcome below...
