New Experience #85: Becoming A Pescetarian

Of all the things to decide whilst at a mainstream rock festival, finally committing myself to the almost-veggie cause was an unexpected turn. I had subtly, but not totally, been avoiding meat for weeks but when in a particularly meditative mood one evening at Reading had a word with myself. And then became Pescetarian. That is, I'll eat fish but no other killed animal. It's better for the Earth and for me and it means that whilst I'm still living with my carnivorous family, I won't be as much of a pain to cook for as a full-blown veggie.

Rating: 4/5 A pretty easy transition but in one week I had to turn down meat three times and find a replacement. I'm going to miss bacon and chicken dinners but I've come out as Pescetarian and am proud.

New Experience #86: Supporting A Project On Kickstarter

As soon as I stumbled upon kickstarter.com one evening I was hooked. The idea of the site is that musicians, artists, designers and in fact any creative type can promote a proposed project, such as a new album recording or a game concept, for people like you and me to sponsor and help make happen. In return, we get something cool from the artist, like a signed tee or some of their previous work, the exact coolness of which being reliant upon how much we pledge. If the project is completed we pay up and get our 'prize', but if the funding target isn't met, no money is taken from our accounts. I think it's a brilliant way of funding arty projects- utilising the internet in difficult economic times to boost cultural happenings.

I gave a tenner to help Florida's Yuno whose song Sunlight had really caught my ear this summer as I festivaled around the place.

Now that he has received the full amount he needs to make his new album, I will get his back catalogue sent over to me as a thank you.

Rating: 4/5. Like donating to charity, you feel great for supporting another person. And you also get something physical back for it. A top way to spend left over cash, and as there are thousands of fascinating projects to flick through and read about, it's also a top way to spend an hour or so too.
