New Experience #54: A BAFTA Film Masterclass
To celebrate the Cultural Olympiad, Film Nation and BAFTA have joined up to present a series of free talks by industry professionals aimed at young, aspiring film-makers. I have had little experience of making films but love watching them so headed to Chapter for the snappily titled Mastering Your Craft: First Assistant Directing with Dan Winch. Dan has worked as First AD on TV projects such as Birdsong and Appropriate Adult, on feature films including Tyrannosaur and Boy A and on Peter Kay’s video of 2005 Comic Relief single Amarillo. He talked openly about how to get involved with film (be a runner), what his role is all about and played clips from his films to illustrate his points.
Rating: 4/5 A very interesting (and free) insight into the complex world behind the lens, which we punters too often forget about.
New Experience #55: Reviewing A Music Festival
For me, you can’t go wrong with some mud and some music, so my summer is full of festivals-a-go-go. I was fortunate enough to nab a press pass to review Beach Break Live for CLIC and despite ending up going alone, which I probably wouldn’t recommend, had a marvellous time. Access to the press area meant better toilets and a selection of private performances from certain bands, but it was out in the more alternative stages where I had most fun. Most of the music was great and I got talking to some friendly folks from music mags and university papers and a dude called Stu from Sussex.
Rating: 5/5 A highlight of my year so far, even if it took me two weeks to write up the review. Hopefully I’ve taken another small step up as a music journalist with this under my belt.
