New Experience #39: Pilates
Having dappled with some Zumba two weeks ago, I returned to the exercise class theme this week with a bout of Pilates.
Penylan Community Centre was packed and so there was little space to manoeuvre and a microphone issue meant I had to lip read the instructor’s demands, which can be difficult when your head is down or when your legs are at some excruciating angle and block your frontal view completely. It is also hard to concentrate when your mate’s long limbs start invading personal space.
Fellow attendees told me that it would be well hard on the abs but having done similar exercises for many years during athletics training, I felt quietly confident.
During the session I felt okay and came away thinking I’d conquered the Pilates beast. But did I ache in the morning. Core blimey!
Rating: 4/5 Cheaper than Zumba and a better workout but not half as fun.
New Experience #40: Olympic Training
I’d put my name down to be a Sport Cardiff Olympic Ambassador, or a volunteer at the Olympic football to you and me, and had my first session of training at the Millennium Stadium last weekend. So proceeded four hours of varied instruction, including a PowerPoint full of Olympic trivia, a talk from a Commonwealth Games hockey player and most scarily, what will happen in the event of a terrorist threat. The long queue for refreshments during the tea-break may foreshadow the inefficiency to come but it wouldn’t be a British event without a bit of that.
On the whole, it was an eye opening and enjoyable morning.
Rating: 4/5 Another centenary reached with a highly topical new experience for 2012. More Olympic frolics to come.

Need to try out some Pilates, but would much rather street dancing!

I think there's street dance classes in Cathays Community Centre.
