New Experiences: #108 - #112

New Experience #108: Gluten-Free, Vegan Cheesecake
After my second batch of meditation (New Experience #106) at Cafe Atma, we were served a healthy alternative to an unhealthy classic. Tofu replaced cheese and the biscuit was stripped of its gluten.
Rating: 4/5 Surprisingly tasty, despite an unusual texture. Guilt-free deserts are where it's at.
New Experience #109: Leading A Philosophy Discussion
Once every few weeks, a philosophy cafe is held at my school by students and we debate issues from ageing to religion and science. I was asked to hold a discussion and, inspired by the Control Arms campaign, which is demanding stricter regulation on sale of small arms, focused in on whether we need weapons. Such an issue was slightly difficult to engage in philosophically but engage we did and like all good philosophy debates, no real conclusions were reached but some interesting tangents emerged. I showed clips from Bowling For Columbine as stimulus and had at least two cups of tea to help me move the debate on smoothly. Easier said than done...
Rating: 3/5 What I learnt: When a debate needs re-directing, a room full of opinionated people is hard to control.
New Experience #110: Reviewing A Film
Acclaimed Austrian film-maker Michael Haneke's recent endeavour, Amour, picked up this year's Palme D'Or at Cannes and was showing at Chapter. I had wanted to try a film review for some time. So, I thought, bugger it, I'll work up a critical response and start this movie reviewing ball rolling. And roll it did, published on the brilliant Plastik Magazine.
Rating: 4/5 The film was rather excellent and writing the review was surprisingly easy, perhaps credit to Amour's memorability. One of 2012's cinematic gems as my review tries to explain why.

New Experience #111: Miso Soup
Miso soup is a classic Japanese dish made from consisting of a fish stock called "dashi", and softened miso paste, a traditional seasoning produced by fermenting rice, barley, and soybeans with salt and the fungus k?jikin. My soup, purchased at that well-known Oriental restaurant, Pret A Manger, featured some kelp and a cocktail of seaweeds. Pretty odd with an Earl Grey, but there we are.
Rating: 3/5 Too salty for me, but seaweed's healthy so it's all good.
New Experience #112: Cocktails
In a less healthily dietary move, I tried classic cocktail Sex on the Beach whilst on a night out. As someone who quite enjoys the taste of alcohol in moderation, the masking flavour of this fruity mix wasn't something I'd rush for regularly but I definitely felt more sophisticated than when sipping a Brains Dark. And the buzzy chill of a cocktail bar was a welcome change from my local.
Rating: 4/5 Yum, yes. Expensive, yes. Good for a chat with a friend, yes.

If you don't enjoy the masking flavour of a Sex on the Beach, I suggest your next cocktail be a Long Island Ice Tea from Buffalo. Now that's a drink with a kick.
