New Experience #25: FluTube
After a very busy week (see New Experiences #21 - #24), come Monday I was feeling a little run down. By Thursday, I was feeling like death warmed up, left to cool and then reheated even though it said you shouldn’t on the packet.
Quite. I woke up with a razor-sharp pain in my throat, a stonking amount of mucus in each nostril and eerily numb limbs. With it more like bird flu than man flu, I would have happily spent a day under the covers but I’d already arranged to go to a campaigning training day in Westminster with Oxfam. The charity had booked my train ticket in advance and, at such late notice, I had no way of contacting my fellow attendees. So at 7.30am I struggled across Cardiff to get my train.
Three hours later I was in London, with a migraine added to my list of symptoms. I knew I had to face the underground, with all its noise and general busyness and in my ill state was actually quite scared. The first trip was okay, but it was coming back from the conference in the stampede of the rush hour that was really horrible.
The underground is a form of transport, which I don’t like much anyway, mostly because I’d much rather be out in the open air than in a tunnel. However, after a day of trying desperately to engage in conversation with super enthusiastic strangers when genuinely unwell, it was quite unbearable. I could barely stay awake, never mind stand for twenty minutes crammed next to the suited and booted who frowned every time I sniffed. Perhaps I’m being slightly melodramatic here, but it was probably the worst experience of my life and I would recommend you stay away from crowded public transport next time you too, feel like catarrh on legs.
Rating: 1/5 Flu in bed is much more manageable.
