New Experience #100
W/C 5th November 2012
Boom shack-a-lack. So here it is. At the start of this year, I set out to have one new experience a week and with a month and a bit to go, I've almost doubled my original target. The challenge thus far has been refreshing, incredibly fun, marvellously eye-opening and at times knackering. I've now reached the century and am feeling inspired to fill the remaining weeks with as much new stuff as possible. Here's #100...
New Experience #100: A Greek Tragedy
Huzzah! Our brilliant Sherman Cymru Theatre is home to the more interesting touring productions on offer and Headlong Theatre's acclaimed modern day version of Euripides' Medea is no exception. As a culture vulture at heart, seeing a Greek tragedy had been on the list for a while and direct adaptations don't come around all that often. This style of theatre was adored by the Greek audiences and as Aristotle set out the key elements in his Theory Of Tragedy should be "an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude." This was a manic, disturbing and ultimately deadly production set in suburbia, with clever stage design and a defiant performance from Rachael Stirling as Medea, who honoured the traditional role of the tragic hero magnificently. No great surprise at the ending of course, but it still managed to shock.
Rating: 3/5 The piece was well produced and directed, and I was very happy to stumble upon Stormer007 at the fascinating post-show talk. As a 100th new experience it could have been a little more 'out there', although as you will see I made up for that in weeks to come...
