I Love Banger Racing
Banger racing is a full contact motor-sport. But it’s still a race, the first car over the line wins. It’s not like a “Demolition Derby”, where cars crash into each other and the winner is the last one in (roughly) working order. It’s just a race where demolition is encouraged.
Due to its physical nature, old cars are used hence the name “banger racing”, although more sophisticated cars are becoming more common at big events. Think Ford Grenadas, old Volvos and the occasional battered jag.
And if you get bored of normal cars going round and bashing into each other then there are all kinds of bizarre spin-offs.
Siamese Banger Racing is where you chain two cars together, but still have two people driving independently. Another version is stacking one car on top of another, with the top driver steering and the bottom driver controlling the gas and the brake. You might have seen this on Top Gear. Then you got “Train” racing where three cars are tied together with various bits missing.
You don’t have to have a driving license to race bangers, as long as the track is on private land and you have permission. I’m 16 and I go banger racing at Marshfield just past St. Mellons on the way to Newport and I took the pictures there.
