Cinderella @ The New Theatre
The festive season has crept up on us once more and has brought forth great fun and frolic to the New Theatre with the panto camping up the stage for the next four weeks.
Cinderella is the classic rags to riches tale, and is played out before us with great glitter and glorious glee with gags (some more dubious than others) galore, and unscripted mayhem a-plenty in what for me, is the ultimate in fantasy tales. The panto never fails to make me giggle and the marvellous Brian Conley steals the show as Buttons, whose rapport with the children and ‘naughtier’ jokes for the adults made him incredibly funny and as I sat as an adolescent I could enjoy both sides of his character. His ad-lib spontaneity really made his performance stand out and he is perfect for panto.
Supporting Brian was a fine cast, with Dawson Chance as Baron Hardup, whose hand puppet ‘Little Willy’ became rather annoying if I’m quite honest and the fittingly Ugly Sisters, played by Darren Southworth and Brian Godfrey, showcased an array of tacky outfits, fake bosoms and hairy legs. Lovely. Amy Pemberton was indeed so as Cinderella, whose flying off to the ball, pulled by a life-sized, white winged horse, caused plenty of oohs and aahs.
Sharon Cherry Ballard, the Fairy Godmother who fixes up Cinders, was excellent and my little sister’s favourite - her eyes lit up whenever she came on stage. Her line “You shall go to the ball!” was welcomed like an old friend by the audience.
As with any good pantomime, no one took it too seriously and a good laugh was had by all - I couldn’t recommend it more if you’re looking from a respite from the weather.
On a personal note, I would like to say a huge thank you to all at the New, especially Matt and Elisabeth, for a great year of shows and a warm welcome every time. I look forward to another year of reviews in 2011.
Cinderella will go to the ball until Jan 23rd. For tickets call the box office on 029 2087 8889 or book online.

I went to see this on Friday, and it was spectacular. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the beloved panto. I especially enjoyed hearing my 14-year old nephew groan everytime Little Willy said "Issss iittttt???" Haha, HIGH-larious! Great review. I though tit was an excellent panto and can;t wait for next years!
